Long-time NCC supporter and volunteer Harriet Vanderbilt spoke to our new Professional Counselor Associate Lu Lu and learned a little more about her!
As a girl growing up in China, Lu Lu learned the social and cultural impact of tradition on her life at an early age. With the help of tutors, she worked hard and earned high grades. She was not naturally disposed to want to study, “I was a bit of a wild child! I wanted to have fun. I did not want to study!”
At the age of 21, Lu Lu came to America. She had a desire to give back to society, help others, and learn about the American culture. She earned a degree in Psychology from Oregon State University. Lu Lu trained and worked with children as part of her Master’s degree. She continues her work with kids, using play therapy as a communication tool.
Lu Lu is married and has a 5-year-old son. Together with her husband, she enjoys all that Oregon has to offer. “We love to go hiking and to go to the many playgrounds in Portland.” She added that “I do not like the cold weather! But I do like the rain and all the warm, sunny days in the summertime!”
As a member of the Northwest Catholic Counseling Center staff, she is very appreciative of the support given to her by her coworkers. Lulu has been with the Center since October of 2021. She offers counseling in Mandarin as well as in English.
