Every young person deserves to grow up feeling safe, valued, and supported for exactly who they are.
Unfortunately, many members of our LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) community face unique hardships that threaten their well-being, housing security, and even their personal safety.
From school hallways to doctor’s offices, LGBTQ+ youth navigate stigma and discrimination at much higher rates than their peers.
This lack of support takes a heavy emotional and physical toll. When a young person’s environment isn’t affirming, they face a much higher risk of dealing with anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, family rejection, and bullying.
The numbers paint a stark picture. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), compared to their cisgender and heterosexual classmates, LGBTQ+ students are significantly more likely to experience severe challenges:
- Bullied at school: 29% of LGBTQ+ students (compared to 16% of their peers)
- Used illicit drugs: 15% of LGBTQ+ students (compared to 8% of their peers)
- Seriously considered suicide: 41% of LGBTQ+ students (compared to 13% of their peers)
Breaking Down Barriers to Care
When healthcare environments don’t explicitly offer safety and understanding, young people often avoid seeking medical or mental health care altogether.
They may stay away out of a justified fear of judgment or discrimination. In other cases, they might hide their true identities to protect themselves, making it impossible to get the transparent, accurate care they need.
Finding a provider who is genuinely knowledgeable, competent, and welcoming shouldn’t be an uphill battle. When healthcare is hard to access, it compounds the vulnerabilities these youth already face. These include housing instability, mental health crises, and interpersonal violence.
At NCC, we believe that healthcare is a fundamental right, and safety is non-negotiable. That is why we are deeply committed to providing warm, competent, and gender-affirming care for every member of the LGBTQ+ community.
What Exactly is Gender-Affirming Care?
At its core, gender-affirming care means recognizing, validating, and celebrating a person’s true self.
At NCC, it is about much more than just a policy on paper. It is an intentional, clinic-wide culture where discrimination has no place. From the words we use to the way our physical office looks, every detail is designed to signal safety, comfort, and respect from the moment a client walks through our doors.
Moving Beyond the Binary: What True Inclusion Means
True inclusion requires a conscious, ongoing effort. It means understanding that who a person is on the inside (their gender identity), who they are attracted to (their sexual orientation), and how they present themselves to the world (their gender expression) are all unique.
Traditional healthcare systems often cause deep, lasting harm by trying to force people into binary boxes (male or female), ignoring the diversity of human identity. At NCC, we reject those limiting boxes. We recognize and honor the full spectrum of our clients’ identities.
Our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community also extends beyond our clinic walls. You will see NCC staff and board members showing up in the community. We attend celebrations, honor holidays, stand together at vigils, and participate in local service work.
Putting Values into Practice: Our Clinical Approach
To ensure our clinic is a genuinely safe space, we have integrated affirming practices into every step of our care. Here are a few concrete ways we put our values into action:
- Inclusive Paperwork: Our forms ask for gender identity, pronouns, and chosen names, and we validate diverse relationship and family structures.
- Strict Privacy: We respect our clients’ privacy completely; sexual orientation and gender identity are never disclosed to anyone without explicit consent.
- Honoring Chosen Names: Even when a legal name is required for insurance or official documentation, we ensure a client’s chosen name is used in all day-to-day interactions and clinic spaces.
- All-Gender Restrooms: We provide two single-use, all-gender restrooms for maximum comfort and privacy.
- A Welcoming Environment: Our clinic is intentionally decorated with signage and visual cues that let LGBTQ+ clients know they are safe, welcome, and belong.
- Freedom of Expression: We fully support youth in wearing clothing and expressing themselves in ways that align with their true identity.
- Continuous Learning: Our clinicians regularly participate in specialized continuing education to stay up-to-date on the best, most compassionate care practices for the LGBTQ+ community.
A Community Where Everyone Can Thrive

NCC’s mission is simple: to support access to high-quality mental healthcare for everyone.
Our ongoing efforts to build a safe, welcoming space and provide compassionate care are at the core core of who we are.
When people receive healthcare that honors their dignity, listens to their unique challenges, and celebrates their true selves, they don’t just get by. They thrive.
